BASS PLAYER MAGAZINE, in which Oteil mentions Billy...

"
Oteil Burbridge Opens It Up With The Family Secret"

Like Jaco Pastorius with his Word Of Mouth big band or Marcus Miller with his trusty sextet, Oteil Burbridge takes it up a notch with his group, the Peacemakers. His signature sing-along solos seem boundless, his pulsing grooves roam more freely, and even his trademark 6-string chords ring a bit more densely. The brilliant, multi-stylistic Allman Brothers Band/Aquarium Rescue Unit bassist has recorded two CDs with the Peacemakers. The second, The Family Secret, marks the recorded debut of the group’s best lineup to date: vocalist Paul Henson, guitarist Mark Kimbrell, drummer Chris Fryar, keyboardist/violinist Jason Crosby, and saxophonist Kebbi Williams. Best of all, the 11-track CD is only part of a potent package: Included at no extra cost is a DVD that features a video montage of the songs with and without band commentary, a stereo surround mix, a making-of documentary, and a 40-minute bass lesson—plus mp3s and printable lead sheets on the CD.

With his signature Modulus Quantum semi-hollowbody 6-string on the Allman Brothers truck, Oteil Burbridge recorded The Family Secret on a Modulus 6 borrowed from the Derek Trucks Band’s Todd Smallie. He also played his Kydd Carry-On electric upright, which he likes because of its short 30" scale length, on “My Dog Sassy.” Both went direct and through a miked vintage Ampeg B-15. Oteil’s new main bass is a custom Fodera Monarch 6-string; it features a walnut back, sugarleaf maple top, Madagascar kingwood neck, “extended B headstock” (to go along with its 35" scale), Seymour Duncan single coil/humbucking JJ pickups, and a Fodera/Pope preamp. Remaining in his rotation are several Modulus 6-strings, his ’64 Jazz Bass (used with the Allman Brothers, along with a Steve Clayton acetal/polymer 80mm rounded-triangle guitar pick),

AND A CUSTOM J-STYLE 5 BUILT BY ALABAMA LUTHIER BILLY GALLANT.

His strings are D’Addario XL170s (.032, .045, .065, .085, .100, .130). Live with the Peacemakers and the Allmans, he plugs into two Ampeg SVT-4PRO heads, with two Ampeg SVT410HLF and two SVTPR-15H cabinets.
